# Bekah's Baking Atelier: The Site I Built for the Baker I Married

I spend most of my working hours on backend systems that nobody outside a handful of engineers will ever see. So it's a nice change of pace when a project has a face, a name, and a person I love standing behind it.

My wife's home bakery now has a proper home on the internet: [Bekah's Baking Atelier](https://bekahsbakingatelier.com/).

## The baker

Bekah has been baking for as long as I've known her, and not in the casual "I made cookies this weekend" sense. She's the person who will spend a Saturday getting a single sugar rose right, then throw it out and do it again because the petals curled wrong. She'll take a request as vague as "my daughter really likes pandas" and come back with a two-tier cake that somehow captures exactly what that kid had in her head.

What I find genuinely impressive about it — and I say this as someone whose creative outlet is a text editor — is that it's two crafts stacked on top of each other. There's the design work everyone photographs, and then there's the part that actually decides whether the cake was any good, which is what happens when someone takes a bite. She refuses to trade one for the other. The tagline on the site is hers: artistry you can see, magic you can taste.

## The business

It's a cottage bakery in Lehi, Utah, working out of our kitchen. Wedding cakes, birthday and celebration cakes, cheesecakes, truffles, cupcakes — made to order, in small batches, one project at a time.

The part I like best about how she runs it: every order starts as a conversation rather than a catalog. She wants to know what the occasion is and what the person actually loves before anything gets designed. That's a deliberately unscalable way to run a bakery, which is precisely the point — it's why the finished thing looks like it belongs at that wedding or that birthday, and not like something pulled off a shelf.

## The part I did

My contribution was the least impressive half of this, but I had a lot of fun with it. The site is built around the same "magic" idea that runs through her work — the logo is an angled whisk throwing off sparkles, with a four-color palette of gold stars, purple dots, a silver whisk head and a brown handle. It's a single SVG recolored and resized in CSS, which meant I could push it around until the proportions felt right without redrawing anything.

Beyond that: a gallery that gets out of the way of the photos, a services breakdown, a blog she's already filling with posts about flavor pairing and how a custom design comes together, and a contact form that starts the conversation the way she'd want it to start.

Building software for someone you live with is a specific experience. There's no ticket, no spec, and no ambiguity about whether the stakeholder is satisfied. Highly recommend it.
